study update inspiration

Last week I mentioned that the study was on my radar for getting a more functional update. It’s definitely an “out of sight, out of mind” room for me, so it hasn’t gotten much attention. Matt primarily uses it to play video games when I’m in the living room working or watching The Office for the gazillionth time. When we weren’t sure that we were going to stay put at this place, I didn’t think I was going to put any effort into it. Now that we’re staying, I’ve got the itch to make it 1) prettier and 2) a place I can actually work in, instead of working all day at the kitchen island or on the couch.

Oof. This is the before, from right after we moved in over a year ago. I actually have no wide shots of this room that are recent (and since my camera’s broken, I can’t take any wahhh), but I’ve since hung up a few things, styled the shelves, and changed the pillows and blanket. Things that will stay: the side table, the couch, and the curtains, and TV.

We’d like to add some storage on the wall facing the couch by the window, and in place of the bookshelves we’d like to add a looong desk for lotsa workspace for both Matt and I. The TV would get mounted on the wall above one side of the desk, and we’ll probably add a monitor as well because we are robonoids from the future that can’t work without a billion screens. That’s actually not at all true, I am perfectly content to work on a laptop with no additional screens, but Matt works a lot in Excel and the additional screen will be super helpful for that. And the TV will still be for video games/when I need to binge The Office to get through a day of work.

We won’t be going for that desk exactly, but I do love the image as a base for our inspiration. The general idea is a base of whites, blacks, and light wood tones with pops of plants. But since you know I have proven to not be able to handle an all-neutral room, I’d love to find a space for a super-nuts, awesome, colorful, textural inspiration board. Like so:

I put together a lil mood board with inspiration as well as some sources I’d like to incorporate. (Sources are linked below the image.) That rug was love at first sight when I saw it on this post from Emily Henderson, I’ve been dyyying to try that Ikea bed slat hack (the hanging storage), to save counter space I like the idea of mounting a light (maybe on the bed slats?), I’ve wanted a Stendig calendar for a very very long time, and love the idea of a black/white mudcloth for some durable pillows on the couch. Run-on sentences are fun.

One thing I haven’t been able to choose is a desk chair — any tips on something low profile, neutral, comfy-ish, and cheap? Or tips on squeezing storage space, an office, and a den out of one tiny room? 😀

p.s. You can see more inspiration and sources on the Pinterest board I made for this room here.
