House Tour: Dining Room

Welcome to my house tour series! And by house, I mean apartment. It won’t be a long series, per se, mainly because I don’t have that many rooms. 🙂 I am starting with the dining room because this is the first room you see when you walk into my apartment. This viewpoint is taken from the front door:

I have been super lucky and have received some awesome hand-me-down pieces from my parents. The cherry wood table has been around since the 90s. I love its sleek design. The blue chair and green antiqued table are also pieces I’ve inherited. Do they match? No. I don’t even know if they “go.” But I’m a big fan of the “use pieces that you love, and they’ll all go together” thought process.

Here’s a better shot of the chair and table. I had a lot of empty frames, so I printed some of my favorite images on cardstock and framed them to go around my poster from the Georgia O’Keeffe museum. (I’m sure this is unethical, I apologize. It’s also free.) The mirror was a cheap Martha Stewart find from Home Depot, and the lamp is Target.

The table sits on a sale rug from Urban Outfitters. The huge pink polka dots make me smile. I have been tempted to get a nicer/larger rug for the space, but I keep reminding myself that I should probably wait until Finn is 100% accident-free to make that purchase. The wall on the left holds our “bar” and features the DIY yarn letters I wrote about a few weeks ago.

This shot faces back towards the front door. The hooks and small table serve as our “entryway,” mainly because we really don’t have one. There’s just enough space for hooks for keys/dog leashes and a small table to keep mail. (Which I kind of hate, unless the mail is something cute I can put on my fridge. Otherwise, just email me! Why are we still getting so much mail??) The black and white sister art was given to me by my mom. It used to scare me when I was little, but now I love it.

So, that completes the dining room tour! If you have a question about a particular source, please let me know in the comments and I will do my best to track down info for you. Stay tuned for more house tour, and share your own tour in the comments if you have one! I’d love to see your spaces!

Liebsies, or the Liebster award if you’re fancy.

So, a very kind blogger somehow stumbled across my blog and then that blogger somehow liked what they were reading on my blog. This one. The one you’re reading now. They liked it enough to nominate it for a Liebster award, which is basically blogger-speak for “I like your blog and you’re new here so I’m going to give you an award to encourage you.” Which is actually super nice. Thank you, My Knotted Life! You are too kind!

The way it works is I answer 10 of her questions and then I pay forward the Liebster kindness by nominating 10 blogs below. Feel free to check them out at the bottom of this post. But first: it’s question/answer time.

1. How long have you been blogging?

Ehhh I blogged for about 7 months around a year and a half ago. Then I got a boyfriend and a dog and forgot how to have time for anything else. But I’m figuring it out again! This time around I’ve only been blogging for about three weeks.

2. What or who serves as your blogging inspiration?

Kind of a multitude of things. I like to be creative, I like to share my interests/projects with people, and I enjoy playing with the interwebz. I know in 30 years we might equate blogs to scrapbooks and roll our eyes at everything we wrote, but right here and now it’s fun for me.

3. If you’re not in front of your computer writing a post, what could your fans find you doing to enjoy your free time?

Walking my dog, making my boyfriend watch Scrubs with me, getting dinner with girlfriends, chatting on the phone with my family non-stop, attempting to make my house look cute.

best show ever.

4. Has there ever been a project or idea that didn’t go as you planned? AKA, any DIY disasters?

Ferrr sure. Senior year of college I wanted to paint our upstairs bathroom. We lived in a house that was built in the 1940s and I swear the bathroom hadn’t been repainted since then. The walls were a dingy white, so I wanted to clean it up with some fresh, soothing, green paint. I went for a subtle light green that turned out neon. I kept thinking “it will dry differently” or “the second coat will make it look better.” HOURS later after cutting in around a pedestal sink, toilet, shower, mirror, etc., it looked AWFUL. But at that point, there was no turning back. I now knew exactly how long it would take me to repaint it and that was NOT gonna happen, so my poor roommates and I had to live with it all year.

I maintain that it looked better than the dingy white.

6. Where do you see your blog in 1 year?

In a year I should be in a new place with new design projects to tackle, so I’d love to keep writing and have more than 3 readers. 🙂

5. If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

In this exact moment: 1) congested 2) procrastinating 3) hongry.

7. If you could have anyone play you in a movie, who would it be and why?

Meg Ryan when she was cool. If that is not an option, I’ll take Kate Hudson or Reese Witherspoon because I luff them.

8. What’s your favorite home purchase/project you ever made?

Either my super-sale duvet from Pottery Barn, my Craiglist-steal Expedit, or my prints from We Are 1976. (below)

9. Any travel plans this year?

Going to Steamboat Springs, CO in July to visit my brother and trying to get to Vegas in September for my sister’s 21st. Nothing too crazy!

10. What advice would you give to any other new bloggers out there?

I’m definitely not wise enough to offer any advice, so I’ll just say good luck! And have fun!

Here are the 10 blogs I’m nominating:

  1. lb style
  2. bonnie interiors
  3. A La Place Clichy
  4. Holly Beals
  5. The Mix
  6. Home Sweet Life
  7. The Cheerio Diaries
  8. Not Your Average Dairy Queen
  9. Maddy’s Lil Corner Blog
  10. The Interior Design Style Blog

Thanks again to My Knotted Life for the nomination!

A Day in the Life

I wanted to give a peek into a day in my life over here. Hope you guys are strapped in cause this is going to be EXCITING. You’re going to be like “How does she do it?? How does she fit all that in to one measly day?!?” Obviously kidding. Sometimes I see that “You have as many hours in the day as Beyonce” quote, and I get really annoyed because while that may be true, Beyonce also has a herd of staff doing her bidding.

Anywayyy. This was my Monday:

6:44- Get woken up by Finn whining to go outside. Throw on my Sunday pants (definition: extremely comfortable, extremely unattractive sweatpants perfect for lounging on Sundays) and Crocs because I like to look as disgusting as possible when I take my dog out in the morning to dissuade people from talking to me. Just kidding, that’s not the reason. I just can’t be bothered whatsoever to even try to look presentable at this hour.

6:45- Alarm goes off while I’m putting on said Sunday pants. Become annoyed that Finn woke me up one minute before my alarm. Instantly forgive him because he is doing his early morning stretch thing and he’s adorable.  Take Finn out.

Finn | Awfully Big Adventure
see? adorable.

6:55- Get back in bed with Finn, because I need to check Instagram/Facebook/Twitter/the weather/my three email accounts/Pinterest if I’m really searching for an excuse to stay in bed.

7:10- FINE I’M UP UGHHHHHHHHHHHH. Put off showering for as long as possible (make a smoothie, stuff Finn’s toys with some treats for when I leave him later, fluff the pillows in my living room while I brush my teeth cause I’m a crazy person)

7:30- Finally showering and now it’s a race against timeeee. Will I have time to dry my hair? Who knows?? Told you this was going to be exciting!!

8:10- What the actual hail just happened? I showered, dried my hair, put on makeup, slapped on some clothes, packed my lunch, and got out the door in 40 minutes. THIS DAY IS MINE. Leave Finn with an arsenal of toys and the TV on because I’m a crazy person.

8:25- At work 5 minutes before I’m technically “late.” THIS DAY IS STILL MINE.

8:26- AW YISSSS I forgot we get fed breakfast on Mondays. Maybe I can be Beyonce. Flying high.

8:30- My wittle brain transitions into work time. Fire up the Spotify playlist, pull up my Todoist to-do list that saves my life on a daily basis, and plan out my day when SURPRISE! meetings meetings emails skype gchat more meetings aaaaaand I’m feeling less like Miss Bey.

11:30- My sister is going to my house today to take Finn on a walk so I have a whole glorious lunch hour to relax.  And by relax, I mean run errands, because that’s the same thing, right? On this particular break I head to a local pet shop to pick up a new leash and harness for my beast because he has basically broken through his old ones.

12:30- Eat lunch at my desk meetings meetings meetings emails skype gchat more meetings.

5:00- Try a new gym that is so close to my new office that I can’t not work out there.

6:00- Home to the bean! Put on his new harness and leash and take him for a walk around the neighborhood. This is my favorite part of the day.

Finn | Awfully Big Adventure
feelin’ fancy in his new harness

7:00- Showa, cook ground turkey for taco salad, finally do dishes (my least favorite chore.) Realize I never cook anymore because now we have Trader Joe’s and they make it so easy to not cook. Feel like a bad girlfriend for not finding time to make it to Matt’s softball game. Make myself feel better by reminding myself that they lose every game anyway.

Taco Salad | Awfully Big Adventure
mmm. taco-y. salad-y. delicious.

8:00- Eat dinner, fold laundry, get ruhl emotional watching the How I Met Your Mother series finale.

9:00- Talk to Matt and learn that they actually won their softball game. I think this is the second time that has happened. I should have been there 🙁 Put laundry away. Take Finn out again. I want a yard so baddd.

9:30- I am le tired! Wind down by watching some sweet, sweet, super-addicting HGTV. Sometimes I think about giving up cable but then how would I know if they’re going to love it or list it?!

HGTV | Awfully Big Adventure
real life- dog toy, rogue cords, water cup.

10:30- Something about a snuggly pup makes it so easy to go to bed. Night night!

So, that’s a fairly normal day in the life over here. Exciting? Not really. But I like it.
